My reason for picking this paper was because I am not the best writer when it comes to writing papers, but I think that this is one of the papers that I am most proud of. this papers was my film critique, I think that this paper involved lots of critical thinking because I had to do lots of research in order to learn more about the film and when I looked at critiques that did not like the film I had to agree with them on something so I had to think critically about why I would agree with them on something that they did not like about the film or that they thought was missing in the film as well. it was very easy to write about a film that I love and read the critiques about people that loved it as well and see there point of view, and think I completely agree with the statement that they are saying about the film. having the same point of view with the people that like the film and having to write about it was the easy part, but when it came to reading some not so positive critiques about people that did not like the film so much now that was the hard part having to agree with them and having to find something that I maybe thought I agreed with that was when I had to think Critically. I also had to think Critically when I had to talk about why I thought that we had been assigned a national film critique assignment.

Under The Same Moon tells a story about Rosario (Kate Del Castillo) a mother who Illegally Immigrates to the United States, and her nine year old son names Carlitos (Adrian Alonso). Carlitos and his mom have not seen each other in four years, ever since carlitos was five his mom had to leave him in order to support him. And with Rosario now living in Los Angeles, California she calls her son every Sunday with Carlitos living still in Mexico she calls every Sunday at the Same time 10 A.M, from the same exact payphone every time. In Mexico Carlitos lives in a small village with his sick grandmother, and with his oppressive aunt and uncle, which they try to take custody of carlitos when they find out the amount of money that carlito's mother Rosario sends to her son. Carlitos also works for a woman named Carmen (Carmen Salinas) and one day while he was working for her she met two American Immigrant transporters, Martha (America Ferrera), and David (Jessie Garcia), they offer to smuggle small children across the border.
When Carlito's grandmother passes away, he decides that he cannot stay in Mexico any longer and cannot live with his aunt and uncle, so he decides to find the two coyotes that offered Carmen to smuggle small children across the border. And although carlitos crosses the border and makes it out of Mexico, he is stuck in the car because the two coyotes that were taking him had unpaid parking violations, and the car is towed and taken away. Carlitos then continues the journey, as he stays with other illegal immigrants and picks tomatoes with them, but immigration ends up showing up at their work, and carlitos hides and is left behind with another co-worker named Enrique ( Eugenio Derbez), whom does not like carlitos.
carlitos then travels with Enrique, and he ends up finding a job for him and Enrique as well, he then remembers that the same place they are at now is where his father is, he had learned about his father from his aunt and uncle. They end up looking for him in a phone book and find him and carlitos meets up with his father, his father then agrees to take him to meet up with his mother but never shows up. when the father does not show up and Enrique sees how upset carlitos is, he decides to take carlitos himself the two take a bus to L.A , in the meanwhile Carmen finds a phone number where she contacts Rosario, she tells her that her mother has passed away and that carlitos has gone to go look for her. When Rosario finds out she decides to take a bus back to Mexico, meanwhile Enrique and Carlitos are wondering around the city looking for the payphone that his mother always calls from every Sunday. After a long day of searching and seeing that they still have not found the payphone they both fall asleep on a park bench. As Rosario is on a bus about ready to leave she notices a payphone that reminds her of carlitos and she gathers all of her thoughts to make a big decision.
As it starts to become morning, Enrique goes to buy some food for him and Carlitos, and a police officer spots Carlitos sleeping on a bench, when Enrique comes back he sees that they are about to take carlitos and he defends him, and tells him to run, as carlitos is running away from the police and is catching his breath he realizes that there is the payphone that his mother always described to him, and he then realizes that there next to that pay phone is his mother standing.
One of the issues that the film issued, would be that a mother would do anything to give her children the best she could, and that even though she was a single mother trying to raise her child by herself without a father to help her when she needed Carlito’s father. I would say that the main issue that the film was addressing would be single mothers is what I think. The movie was clearly targeting a family audience, showing that there are no borders between families, there is nothing that your love for a loved one can concur, that with the love and support of family you can make anything possible, that you can always get through all of those obstacles. I think that one of the main reasons of why they targeted families would probably be because, they wanted to send out a message more to the families than any others, and also because if it was a family film they would probably have more sellers as well.
I really like the message that this film was giving out, for one because it was a great message, I liked how they made the film all about the son and the mother, I loved how they would both look at the moon and how they made it seem like they were right next to each other. To me them looking up at the moon and in some way feeling like they were very close to each other was some type of way of saying that there is no long distance that no matter what she will always love him and she will always be there for him when he needs her, and that if he is every missing her to just look up at the moon because in reality they are not far from each other. I respond this way because I love that message that there is no long distance for their love. The film did change the way I view the subject because it makes you realize to not give up on something that you really want to go after, to not give up on someone that you love.
Some of the techniques that the filmmaker used, were she used a lot of the actual Mexican Culture that you actually see in real life. The filmmaker made sure that she put in the film all of the struggles that people go through that are immigrants. He also showed actual jobs that immigrants do in order to survive and give their families a better opportunity and a better life then what they may have had. Also the music that was played in the film, one of the songs that was played by Los Tigres del Norte, they were actually musicians that write songs about immigrants not many filmmakers put music like that in their films.
I think that we were assigned an International film, so that in some way we can see other types of filmmaking, sometimes we are always used to seeing one type of film and some of the film-makers do the same thing with their films, and having a national film papers helps us see other points of view. Also having a national film helps us learn about other cultures and the way that they do things and also see how we are all different in many ways, how we all have different customs and different traditions that we have.
